Kerala Bus Operators Federation has said the policy address delivered by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Friday disappointed the private bus industry in the State.

Although the Governor announced the State government’s decision to go ahead with the Indira Guarantee scheme, which allows free travel for women in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, the policy address made no mention of the private bus industry, which is set to be adversely affected by the decision. With women passengers expected to shift en masse to KSRTC buses to avail themselves of free travel, private buses are likely to suffer heavy losses.

The policy announcement did not say a word about protecting the private bus industry, which is already facing difficulties due to reduced income and its inability to meet fuel expenses and workers’ wages. The policy address completely ignored the private bus industry and disappointed the sector, said Hamsa Erikkunnan, general secretary of the federation.
