Voters sent a message to Republicans and the White House that change is needed in New York, Virginia, New Jersey and beyond.

But Democrats are now left to confront competing visions for the party’s future as they seek to flip the House and Senate in 2026.

Trump on Wednesday morning partly blamed the GOP for Tuesday’s losses, suggesting the ongoing government shutdown and his name not being on the ballot were contributing factors.

This shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history, hitting Day 36 on Wednesday. Here’s how we got here.

Some moderate Senate Democrats are working to craft a potential shutdown exit strategy, but they’re getting strong pushback that could scuttle a potential agreement, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court weighed President Trump’s sweeping tariff agenda in a case that places the future of his signature economic initiative into the justices hands.

While liberals justices took the lead in picking apart the Trump administration's arguments, conservative justices Amy Coney Barrett and Chief Justice John Roberts also scrutinized the White House's arguments that the president has authority to impose the levies based on emergency powers.
