    Dr Vishal explains, “Dehydration is a common concern in hot weather. When dehydrated, your urine becomes concentrated, making it harder for your kidneys to eliminate uric acid.”

    Sweating heavily during exercise can also lead to dehydration with similar effects. Staying hydrated becomes even more crucial during summer for those with high uric acid levels.

    The roadmap to lowering uric acid levels

    Fortunately, Dr Vishal and Dr Kakade explained several natural strategies that can effectively manage uric acid:

    Dietary Tweaks: Dr Vishal emphasises eliminating sugary drinks and processed foods while prioritizing low-purine options like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Restricting organ meats, shellfish, and certain fish varieties high in purines is also key.

    Hydration Hero: Drinking plenty of water helps flush out uric acid through urination. This is especially important during summer to prevent dehydration.

    Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight can significantly benefit uric acid levels as fat cells produce more uric acid than muscle cells. Regular exercise is a great way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

    Fibre Power: Dr Kakade recommends consuming at least 5-10 grams of fibre daily to aid in balancing insulin levels, which can further help manage uric acid.

    While these natural approaches are valuable, consulting a doctor is essential. Dr Kakade highlighted the importance of reviewing medications, as some can elevate uric acid levels. They can also discuss the potential benefits of supplements like vitamin C or cherries, but always get professional advice before taking anything new.
