Five people died after an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area collapsed on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) afternoon. Eighteen workers are trapped under the structure.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reached the accident site along with a few Ministers from his Cabinet. “All the agencies are working together. We have rescued 21 persons, of whom three have died,” Mr Adhikari told media persons at the accident site. About 18 people are still trapped inside, contact has been established between them and rescue personnel, he said.

An official told The Hindu that 13 people have so far been rescued and taken to the nearest hospital. According to locals present at the accident site, 50 to 60 workers were working at the site when the accident took place. Rescue teams have started the work of cutting the iron beam and bringing the workers out. Four columns of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army have been swiftly launched for a search and rescue operation.
Deploying immediately after a distress call from the civil administration, a specialised team of Army rescue personnel, specialist engineers, and Medical personnel is assisting in rescue efforts. In coordination with NDRF, SDRF and Kolkata Police, the Indian Army personnel are sparing no effort to find the people trapped under heavy concrete debris.
The Disaster Management Department of the West Bengal government have opened a control room where people can reach out at 8697981070, 033 22143526 and 033 22535185 in connection with the accident at Taratala.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday (June 24) suspended till July 31 work of all under-construction commercial projects approved by the previous TMC government, and ordered a comprehensive audit of such projects following the warehouse collapse in the city that left five people dead.
The Chief Minister made the announcements after visiting the accident site and said preliminary reports submitted to him indicated that the sanctioned building plan of the collapsed warehouse was flawed.
“I have directed the Kolakat Municipal Corporation (KMC) commissioner and the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department to stop work at all under-construction commercial buildings approved by the previous government, including projects where permission was granted after filling up water bodies. All these will undergo an audit,” the CM said.

“All the under-construction activities under the KMC area will remain suspended till an audit is conducted by July 31, 2026, following which the construction may resume,” said CM Adhikari.

Sanjoy Kumar Mukherjee, the public relations officer of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA), stated that the following actions have been taken after the accident.
“Cranes have been mobilised to the site for rescue and debris clearance. Gas cutter sets and SMPA Fire Brigade units have reached the spot,” Mr. Mukherjee.
“Estate Division and Port Security teams already reached the site immediately for coordination and security. Senior officers of SMPA have already reached the site and are monitoring the situation,” he added.
