The mission of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government is to bring the best academic centres of excellence to Kerala, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the State-level school Pravesanotsavam (school reopening fete) at Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom, in the State capital on Monday (June 1, 2026) morning.
“Kerala should become a destination point for education. I promise you that best educational institutions and courses where students from abroad come to study will be realised in the State. Students here too will not need to move out for pursuing higher education,” Mr. Satheesan told the gathering comprising students, teachers, and people’s representatives.
The Chief Minister announced that more centres for promoting scientific temper would be launched in the State. These would be named after the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who was an advocate of scientific temper.
Underscoring the fact that students were living in a time of knowledge explosion with new advancements being made in all sectors, particularly in AI, the Chief Minister urged students to make attempts to gain knowledge. “You must develop a sense of curiosity. The search for knowledge should not end with formal education but should continue lifelong. It should be gained from reading, teachers, and others who are knowledgeable,” he said.
“Out biggest investment are children. Children should grow up not only to realise the dreams of their parents but also of the State. All attempts to destroy it should be defeated,” he said, calling on students to take a strong stance against drug abuse. Motivate your friends to kick off the habit of drugs, Mr. Satheesan said.
He also emphasised the need for a good bond between teachers and parents in order to identify and promote the latent talents of students.
Minister for General Education N. Samsudheen who presided over the function said 3.14 lakh students had taken admission to schools this year. The government vision was ‘Puthuyuga Vidyalayam’ (new age schools). The latest developments in science and technology were being reflected the most in the education sector. The world was a global village. The students here competed with those around the world. Accordingly, the education sector should be strengthened and its inadequacies addressed. Any transformation would be introduced only after discussions with the academic community, Mr. Samsudheen said.
Minister for Health K. Muraleedharan was chief guest at the Pravesanotsavam.
