In a significant step towards making women active partners in Telangana’s clean-energy transition, a ₹3 crore solar power plant, operated by women self-help groups (SHG), was inaugurated at Venkatapuram village in Errupalem mandal of Khammam district on Wednesday (May 27, 2026).
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister and Power Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka termed the launch of the 1 MW solar power plant under the Indira Mahila Shakti Scheme as a historic step towards women’s economic empowerment.
Stating that it was first of its kind initiative in the country, Mr. Vikramarka said the government has taken up solar power projects through women SHGs to augment their income and promote financial self-reliance. The solar power plant would generate an income of ₹14,000 to ₹15,000 per day for the women’s SHGs, amounting to around ₹4.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh per month.
The government has not only provided land for these projects but also provided subsidies. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) have been signed to ensure DISCOMs purchase the electricity generated, he added.
He said that the government intends to establish similar solar power plants in every district to generate 20,000 MW of solar power in the State by 2030.
He pointed out that electricity demand in the State has increased significantly compared to last year. Peak demand, which stood at 15,000 MW in 2023-24, has now risen to 18,485 MW. Despite this sharp rise, uninterrupted power supply is being maintained through advanced planning, he asserted. Minister for Panchayat Raj, Women and Child Welfare D. Anasuya Seethakka and others were present.
