The body of a 39-year-old man who jumped into the Valapattanam river was found near Matool on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as C. Rajesh, alias Raju, a resident of Periyattadukkam under the Bekal police station limits. His body was found by fishers on the shore near Matool groyne in Puthiyangadi at around 6 a.m.
The incident took place on June 30 when Raju and a 35-year-old woman, also from Periyattadukkam, reportedly jumped into the river together. The woman, reportedly the wife of a police officer, was rescued by the locals shortly, who then immediately alerted the Valapattanam police.
The police had launched a search for the missing man, aided by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel, scuba divers and local volunteers.
The police had earlier withheld the man’s identity, pending confirmation. The woman was subjected to a medical examination and officials have indicated that a detailed statement will be recorded to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
