A strong foundation for a democracy would be laid when every eligible person exercises the right to vote, NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha and Police Commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu said, urging the public to participate in the electoral process.

Flagging off a rally from the old Government General Hospital in Vijayawada to mark the National Voters’ Day on Saturday, Mr. Lakshmisha and Rajasekhar Babu said that voting, a fundamental right, is the most powerful weapon that can bring about change in a democratic society.

The health of a democracy depends on the youth, and it is important they exercise their right to vote, the Collector said, adding that a voter registration programme is being organised to mark the formation of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which came into existence on this day in 1950.

Later, the Police Commissioner emphasised that it is the responsibility of everyone aged 18 and above to take part in the electoral process. He also asked the youth to raise awareness among the public about the importance of voting.
