Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Yashasvi Jaiswal created history on Friday, May 19 as he continued his smashing form in the 2023 edition of the IPL scoring his fifth half-century of the season against Punjab Kings. Jaiswal scored 50 (36) in a 188-run chase for the Royals and on the course of his innings, the 21-year-old, who has had a breakout season, broke a 15-year-old IPL record.
Jaiswal needed 42 runs to become the highest run-getter for an uncapped player in an IPL season and the left-hander smashed a half-century. Jaiswal may have gotten out soon after, but he made sure that he now holds the record as he surpassed former Australian batter Shaun Marsh in an elite list.
Marsh, playing for the then Kings XI Punjab, scored 616 runs in the inaugural IPL season including five fifties and a century and won the Orange Cap as well. Marsh made his debut for Australia in the ODIs later in the year in June and his Test debut three years later in 2011. Marsh held the record for 15 years as no one even came close. But Jaiswal, with the season he has had, surpassed Ishan Kishan ‘s 516-run tally long back and registered a massive feat in his name in Dharamsala on Friday, May 19.

Most runs in an IPL season by an uncapped player

    625* – Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rajasthan Royals), 2023

616 – Shaun Marsh (Kings XI Punjab), 2008

    516 – Ishan Kishan (Mumbai Indians), 2020

    512 – Suryakumar Yadav (Mumbai Indians), 2018

    480 – Suryakumar Yadav (Mumbai Indians), 2020

473 – Devdutt Padikkal (Royal Challengers Bangalore), 2021

Jaiswal got out for a duck in the last game but made a good start to his innings. After a few boundaries at the start, he didn’t get much of the strike but made sure he stuck at the crease and then scored some crucial boundaries to hit another half-century. He played second-fiddle to Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a 29-ball fifty and set the stage for Shimron Hetmyer and Dhurv Jurel to finish off the game, which they did in the last over.

The Royals would have liked to chase it down one over before but they will take the win, nevertheless after what has been a disappointing second half.
