Contrary to popular belief, having money and an international visa doesn’t equate to an educated, well-behaved citizen. A woman in Gujarat found this truth the hard way when she was mentally and physically harassed by her NRI husband.
Faisal Patel, a Non-Resident Indian, was recently arrested by the Gujarat police for giving his wife “triple talaq” by sending her a video from London. The woman has alleged mental and physical harassment by her husband in addition to the illegitimate divorce he gave to her.

The story is even more tragic for the woman who has three kids from her previous husband, whom she divorced in 2018. Patel, who could’ve been a beacon of hope for the woman, married her in 2022 but allegedly stopped giving her money just after five months and allegedly abused her. The Navsari woman is even suspicious of an extramarital affair and claims he has a wife and children in London.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the misuse of triple talaq, despite its legal ban in India. What’s more tragic is that the wife waited three months to report the incident, the period of iddat observed by Muslim women after divorce. No matter how many criminal acts are brought there seems to be a serious lack of effort to eradicate these practices at a grassroots level.
