Women Safety In Telugu Film Industry: Chamber Not Doing Enough

A female choreographer made sexual harassment allegations against Jani Master who is also the President of Telugu Film Dancers Association. The victim registered an FIR as well as filed a complaint with the Film Chamber about the same.

Film Chamber called for a Pressmeet and the members of the Sexual Harassment Redressal Panel of Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce announced forming a committee to look into this allegation. They promised a detailed report in this case in 90 days.

The Film Chamber also revealed that a big hero and a big production house promised to give her work.

Everything looks good but the women’s protection, the Film Chamber is talking about is a joke.

Tammareddy Bhardwaja says they solve cases in silence and have come before the media only because the case has come in the media.

TFI has ASARA since 2013 and this Redressal Panel since 2018 to make the industry a safe place for women.

They have not handled more than a handful of cases. It is not that there are no instances of sexual harassment in the industry.

Women in the industry are not aware that such a panel or committee exists. Also, there is no assurance for women their details will be discreet. Tammareddy himself admitted there would be pressure on them in dealing with such cases.

If the Film Chamber is serious about women’s safety at work, they should have such a panel for every association.

For an industry of this nature, the panel members should not be comprised of members of the industry. There should be regular sensitizing sessions for women about how to complain about such cases.

Also, it is a joke if the Chamber says it will not reveal the cases it handles or solves.

If the committee/panel comes before the media only when there is an issue that is blown up in the public idea, it is more like the Chamber is trying to show they are doing something or they are trying to claim their share of the credit.

If there is a logical conclusion in a case, the one who is involved should be named and shamed. Only then, there will be fear in these perpetrators. Also, it will build confidence in the victims that the industry will stand by them.

We have seen how the victims are coming out when the Kerala Government appointed the Hema Committee to look into the Sexual Harassment Cases in the film industry. All it takes is the confidence in the victims that justice will happen for them.

Also, the Panel/Committee should release periodic reports about how the complaining women continue to get work in the industry without any impact.

The Chamber must take steps that those involved in Sexual Harassment should not get work in the industry and must be banned for life.

Only if steps like these are taken, the industry will be a safe place for women.
