Tamil star Vijay has officially announced that his upcoming film, Thalapathy 69, will be his last as he transitions to full-time politics.
A fiery poster has been unveiled, along with the tagline, “The torch bearer of Democracy arriving soon,” hinting at the film’s political undertones.

With music by Anirudh Ravichander, Thalapathy 69 is slated for an October 2025 release, possibly during Diwali.
However, this final film faces a significant challenge. Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated sequel, Jailer 2, is also aiming for an October 2025 release.

Riding on the massive success of the first Jailer, this sequel poses a potential box-office clash with Vijay’s farewell movie.
The question arises: will Rajinikanth extend a gesture of respect and allow Vijay’s final film a solo release, considering this is Vijay’s farewell to cinema? Or will he go head-to-head, stealing Vjay’s thunder by releasing Jailer 2 at the same time?

On paper, Jailer 2 seems to have more buzz than Thalapathy 69, particularly since Thalapathy 69 is directed by H Vinoth, whose last two films, Thunivu and Valimai, were box office disasters.
Vijay’s recent film GOAT, which served as his second-to-last project before his transition into politics, performed well in Tamil Nadu but flopped badly in other languages.
This mixed performance has heightened the stakes for Thalapathy 69, as Vijay would undoubtedly want to end his cinematic career on a high note.
For Thalapathy 69 to be truly memorable, it needs to be exceptionally well-crafted and resonate with a wide audience. Given that it’s his farewell film, Vijay cannot afford a poorly executed project.
The pressure is immense, as a mediocre final film could diminish Vijay’s legacy, and he’s likely aiming for a blockbuster that will leave a lasting impression on fans across the globe.
