Indian families often buy hefty bottles of oil that last for months. However, switching to convenient spray nozzles that release a controlled amount of oil could be a gamechanger.
Indianexpress.com spoke to Dr Soumita Biswas, chief clinical nutritionist at Aster RV Hospital, to understand the health benefits of this innovation.
Biswas explained that oil sprays significantly reduce oil usage. “People can quantify the amount of oil they use instead of pouring it without measurement, which is better for health,” she said.
Oil spray cans are affordable, and the aerosol nozzle helps distribute oil with precision and control.
Are there any health benefits associated with oil?
“Various cooking oils contain nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin E, D, and K with beta carotene. It’s always preferred to use a mixture of oils in cooking instead of relying on just one type,” said Biswas.
Listing popular cooking oils, Biswas mentioned omega-3 rich fish oil, which is good for cardiac health, and healthy fats like olive oil, which have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. “Coconut oil has MCT (medium chain triglycerides), and vegetable oil improves digestion and metabolism,” she said.
According to her, deep-frying causes food to absorb more oil. “Instead, try sautéing with a lesser amount of oil, where oil sprays can be useful. Also, the high heat from frying promotes free radicals that may increase cancer risk,” she noted.
Biswas emphasised that while all oils are safe for use at high cooking temperatures, they should be consumed in limited quantities. She warned that 1 gram of oil provides 9 kilocalories, and excessive consumption can lead to health problems such as obesity, cardiac issues, and other diseases.
