In November last year, WhatsApp released companion mode to select beta testers; this feature allows you to use the instant messaging service on a secondary device (Android tablet), in addition to the primary device.

Now, in an update, WABetaInfo, which tracks WhatsApp-related news, has reported that the Meta-owned platform is releasing an improved interface for the companion mode. To explain, it shared this screenshot:

As seen above, the screen that appears when you are scanning the QR code to open WhatsApp on the additional phone, has been revamped. Earlier, there was an alert that asked users to wait until WhatsApp opened on the secondary device. Now, however, the new interface will let you know how long will it take for the process to finish.

This new interface is already available to select beta testers. In the coming days, it will be rolled out to even more people, said WABetaInfo.

With this ability, users can, in fact, link up to 4 mobile phones and use WhatsApp on each. After the account is linked to a new phone, the chat history is synced across the linked devices. Messages and calls, however, continue to be end-to-end crypted even if these are sent or received on the linked phone.

It is very easy to check if the feature has been enabled for you. For this, open your WhatsApp account on the primary device and look for the ‘Link Device’ option within the registration screen. If this option is visible, then the linking ability has been enabled for you.
