Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has come forward to defend the highly controversial Income Tax Bill of 2025.

The bill gives the authorities rights to the public’s ‘digital’ records like WhatsApp, Telegram, and any business software so as to make it easier for them to uncover any undisclosed income.

The finance minister also revealed the major role played by platforms like WhatsApp and Google Maps in the discovery of unaccounted money.

WhatsApp chats were used by the authorities to track down Rs.250 Crores in crypto transactions.

Similarly, Google Maps Timeline was used to pinpoint the suspect’s frequently visited places, leading to massive cash reserves being discovered.

While such platforms were used in the past, lawyers often held the government accountable in court due to the word ‘digital’ not being present in the Income Tax Act of 1961.

It will be interesting to see whether this bill actually comes to benefit the country upon being passed into an act or if it becomes a mere tool used by authorities to get their way in tricky situations.
