NRI MBBS Aspirants

Last week the Punjab government passed an order that modified the NRI quota for MBBS and BDS seats, extending it to their kin as well. The Court hearing a petition against the order has given its recent say in the matter.

Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday stayed the government order with the next hearing scheduled for September 2. The petition was filed by Geetan Verma and other medical aspirants challenging the legality of the order.

The petitioners argued that first Punjab and Chandigarh passed the order through Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) extending the NRI quota to their ward and nearest relatives. Then, they issued another notice to increase the quota to 15% in Dr. BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, reducing the general seats quota in the process. While the court hearing is still ongoing, they have been ordered to continue the admission process without the modification.

BFUHS is a top-ranked medical institution in Punjab, giving NRIs the option to opt for premium education if they want. Despite the NRI quota, most of the seats in Punjab remain vacant. This could be due to the people still considering international education superior to the Indian. Specially NRIs tend to educate their wards outside India, contributing to such vacancies. That is why the government has modified the quota making more people eligible for it.
