YSRCP Supreme Court

The Supreme Court’s order for the formation of an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Tirumala laddu adulteration case has shifted the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh. The SIT, which will consist of two officers from the CBI, two from the Andhra Pradesh Police, and a senior officer from the FSSAI, will be under the oversight of the CBI Director.

This decision ensures that the investigation will be impartial, much to the surprise of YSRCP leaders who initially believed the issue would not lead to a formal probe. Following the Supreme Court’s remarks last week, YSRCP leaders and their social media supporters had celebrated, believing that the court’s comments signaled no further inquiry into the issue.

They even attacked Chandrababu Naidu and the TDP, hoping the case would fizzle out without a full investigation. Interestingly, even though Jagan Mohan Reddy wrote to the Prime Minister about the issue, he never formally requested a CBI or judicial inquiry, which raised eyebrows. His party also opposed the state government’s SIT, as it was formed by the TDP-led NDA government.

However, once the Supreme Court ordered the formation of an independent SIT, both Subba Reddy and Bhumana Karunakar Reddy of the YSRCP had no choice but to welcome the decision. Their initial confidence that neither the SC nor the central government would pursue an investigation was shattered.
Chandrababu Naidu’s public statements on the adulteration of ghee used in the preparation of the Tirumala laddu put significant pressure on YSRCP leaders, as they were now forced to confront the fact that the issue had escalated beyond their control.

The TDP has consistently maintained that adulteration of ghee occurred during the YSRCP’s rule, especially with the changes in ghee contractors. TDP leaders had always been ready for an investigation and were confident that any inquiry would vindicate their position.

The formation of the independent SIT not only takes the investigation out of state control but also removes the lingering suspicion that the TDP might have influenced the initial investigation. Now that the SIT is set to begin its work, the TDP can rest assured that they are clear of any accusations that they manipulated the earlier reports.

They are also prepared to provide evidence to the new SIT, reinforcing their stance that the YSRCP was responsible for the adulteration of ghee during their administration. Politically, this development puts the YSRCP on the defensive as they must now address the facts that emerge from the independent investigation.
