In a sensational move, OYO has introduced a new check-in policy for its partner hotels, starting in Meerut. Under this policy, unmarried couples will no longer be allowed to check in without providing valid proof of their relationship.
This includes bookings made online. Hotels partnering with OYO now have the authority to refuse bookings if the couple cannot provide the necessary proof.

This move follows feedback from civil society groups who expressed concerns about unmarried couples staying at OYO hotels.
The policy aims to respect local customs and law enforcement requests. This new policy is part of OYO’s strategy to present itself as a family-friendly and responsible brand.

OYO also plans to hold seminars with police and hotel partners on safe hospitality practices, blacklist hotels promoting immoral activities, and take action against unauthorized hotels using the OYO brand.
The company intends to review the policy’s impact and may extend it to other cities based on feedback.

Interestingly, a recent report from Travelpedia 2024 revealed that unmarried couples book the most rooms through OYO, with youth from Telangana being the highest users of OYO’s services.
This shift in policy will likely have significant implications for OYO’s customer base, especially in regions where young unmarried couples are frequent users to have some unadulterated fun.
OYO’s goal with the new policy is to encourage long-term stays and repeat bookings while repositioning itself as a safer choice for families, students, religious and solo travelers.
