There has been an alarming rise in the number of Food-Poisoning cases across Andhra Pradesh in the last few days. We almost saw 7-8 of them in the last ten days or so.

Students are getting sick and are being admitted to hospitals. Random cases happen now and then but this has almost become a pattern in Andhra Pradesh.

There are doubts that there is some foul play involved.

All of these food contractors that supply meals to the Government educational institutions were appointed during the YSR Congress regime.

They were either compromising on the quality or may have some other motive.

For any reason, all the existing contracts should be canceled and tenders should be called for.

On top of it, the incharges and officials responsible for overseeing the food quality should be first reprimanded. These many cases can not go unaccounted for.

It is also interesting to note that the Government is getting a good name for supplying quality food via Anna Canteens.

Anna Canteens scheme is the most popular scheme of this Government.

At this juncture, there is a food-related issue with these instances of Food Poisoning getting non-stop bad name and bad media coverage.

It is very strange if that is a coincidence.

The existing contractors should be penalized either on the grounds of incompetence or foul play and that should happen immediately.

The Government should also strengthen the Food Safety Department to maintain the quality of food, especially in government-run organizations.

Also, the Government should explore the option of giving these contracts to the Hare Rama Movement which is currently supplying food to Anna Canteens.
