What If Kalki Had This Legend, Not Kamal Haasan?

Kalki 2898 AD Kamal Haasan

Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, became a box office hit, despite mixed word of mouth.

Kamal Haasan’s portrayal of Supreme Yaskin left an impact but the expectations were more. The makers claim that his role in the second part would be more significant.

Storyboard artist Venugopal recently revealed that Kamal Haasan was the first choice for the antagonist role. However, the makers had considered Mohanlal as a backup if Kamal did not agree to join the project.

This raises an interesting question: Would Mohanlal have delivered a performance better than Kamal Haasan’s?

Kamal Haasan’s extensive experience and versatility are well-known, and his role as Supreme Yaskin added some depth to the film’s narrative. His ability to portray complex characters with nuance is expected to be the highlight in the second part.

On the other hand, Mohanlal is also a celebrated actor with a strong reputation for his powerful performances. His approach to the role could have brought a different, yet equally compelling, interpretation to the character.

While it’s speculative to predict exactly how Mohanlal would have shaped the role, his impressive track record suggests he could have been a formidable alternative.

Both actors are exceptional, but in terms of pan-India appeal, Kamal Haasan holds a significant advantage. His name carries significant weight, particularly in the Hindi-speaking regions and states like Maharashtra, boosting the film’s reach and impact. Mohanlal isn’t that popular in tier-2 and tier-3 cities of North India.

While the debate continues on who would have performed better, Kamal Haasan’s star power definitely added some edge to the film’s overall success.
