Students from Bhiw Dhanora village of Aurangabad district are forced to take a flimsy raft - sometimes also fighting off water snakes - to make it to school everyday. The students use a thick thermocol sheet as a raft and using makeshift oars cross the kilometre-long stretch of the backwaters of the Jayakwadi dam. The students use bamboo sticks to fend off water snakes that climb onto the thermocol sheet. This is because the backwaters of the dam has cut the village into two sections, and the students now have to cross the backwaters daily.
