Maruti Swift facelift is the brand’s first launch of 2024. With the facelift, Maruti made subtle changes on the outside and a comprehensive change on the inside. Even the engine is all new and that is what exactly not many are happy about. Although the Swift looks sporty, the engine may disappoint you!

New Swift Power – No More Fun?
The new Swift comes with a new 1.2-litre Z-series petrol engine. It is a 3-cylinder unit which produces 80bhp and 112Nm of peak torque. Comparing the new Swift power to the previous version, this engine produces less power and also loses one cylinder. That said, Maruti claims the new engine is a fuel efficient unit with a claimed mileage of 25.75 kmpl. So it is pretty clear that the new engine has been developed with a focus on mileage, making it slower! But how slow?
According to the reports, the new Swift goes from 0 to 60 in 6 seconds, while the 0 to 100 mark comes in 14 seconds. Now that might sound adequate until we compare it with the previous gen model. The pre-facelift Swift, which was equipped with a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, K-series engine, was able to go from 0 to 100 in just 11 seconds. In fact, in terms of acceleration, the new Swift is the slowest Swift ever produced! So if you are planning to buy the new Swift for fun to drive quotient, the engine might disappoint you.

Other Options Available
What else was actually disappointing about the new Swift is the pricing. Maruti has priced the car between Rs 7.67 lakh to Rs 11.32 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). In comparison, Maruti Baleno, which comes with the more powerful 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, K-series engine, is the better choice to buy. The Baleno has been priced between Rs 7.74 lakh to Rs 11.39 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Also, the pricing can go down with discounts based on dealerships.
The other car you can consider is the Citroen C3 hatchback! The C3 is priced between Rs 7.25 lakh to Rs 10.65 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). At the price lesser than the Swift, the French automaker is offering a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine! This engine produces 109bhp and 190Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission only. And of course, the manual is more intuitive to drive for fun.

New Swift Power – Maruti Swift CNG Coming
That said, if you are buying the new Swift with mileage as your priority, you can wait for the Swift CNG. At the launch Maruti did not bring the CNG option but the brand has a plan to soon introduce it in India. However, in the next few months, Maruti will be launching the Swift CNG in India. It will be equipped with the same 1.2-litre Z-series engine and expect to churn out 68bhp of power. Talking about the mileage, we are expecting the Swift CNG to return mileage of around 32 km/kg.
