Wamiqa Gabbi, who earned praise for her performance in Baby John, has opened up about the film’s box office failure and the polarised reception it received. While the action thriller was largely panned by critics and ended up as a commercial disappointment, Wamiqa’s portrayal stood out to several viewers. Speaking to The Times of India, the actor shared her thoughts on the film’s mixed response. “Yeah, I did my best and I think everybody did their best. A lot of people liked it, and a lot of people did not resonate with it also,” she said candidly.
Baby John faced backlash for allegedly being a lacklustre remake of director Atlee’s Tamil hit Theri. Many critics drew comparisons between Varun Dhawan’s performance and that of Vijay Thalapathy, accusing the film of lacking originality. Wamiqa acknowledged that the remake aspect may have worked against its box office prospects. “I also think it was a remake, and people had already watched the original,” she admitted. “But obviously it was not a complete frame-to-frame remake.”
Wamiqa went on to talk about the inherent unpredictability of the film industry. “In our business, I feel like it’s all trust,” she explained. “There’s a meeting, you listen to the story. You have trust that they will make it good. They also have trust on you that you will perform well. Everyone has trust that they will make it. So it’s all based on trust, and you really don’t know what the results are going to be.”
Despite the film’s outcome, she remains grateful for the experience. “I’m very happy. I’m very happy to have met Atlee sir, I’m very happy to have worked with Varun, Jackie Shroff sir, Keerthi, and that little girl Zara. I met some great people, and I had a great time. I’m so glad that I got to experience all of that, and learn so much, and do action. It was so nice,” she reflected.
