Captain Vijayakanth Passes Away, News Live Updates: Tamil-actor politician Vijayakanth passed away on Thursday in Chennai. He was 71. The actor tested positive for Covid-19 and was on ventilator support. An official bulletin said that the actor was admitted due to pneumonia and could not be saved despite the best efforts of the medical team. Fondly known as ‘Captain’, Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital in November for respiratory issues but was discharged a few weeks later. He made his last public appearance on December 14.

He worked only in Tamil films and appeared in over 150 movies throughout his career. He was known for playing a cop on screen and was loved by his fans for the same. It was his 1991 film Captain Prabhakaran that earned him the name ‘Captain’. His party members often addressed him as ‘Karuppu MGR’.
He was known for his box office hits like Chatriyan, Sattam Oru Iruttarai, Vallarasu, Ramana, Engal Anna, Senthoora Poove, Pulan Visaranai, Honest Raj and Chinna Gounder. Vijayakanth was also the president of Nadigar Sangam. he was elected unopposed and held the position until 2006. It was at that time that he launched his political party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).
His party was seen as a formidable force during the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. In 2011, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
