For almost the first four months of 2024 in Kollywood, there were no 100 crore movies. Then, surprisingly, Sundar C’s Aranmanai-4, released on May 3rd, ended up as a super blockbuster and became the first 100 crore grosser of Kollywood this year.
After the success of Aranmanai-4, Soori’s Garudan and Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja were released and received super-positive responses from the audiences, doing wonders in the box office collections.

However, in the same month, surprisingly, Dhanush’s Raayan was released. Despite mixed reviews, the movie collected 150 crores worldwide and became the career highest-grossing movie of the actor.
Vijay’s The Greatest Of All Time was released on September 5th and ended up as the highest-grossing movie in Kollywood. In contrast, other big actor releases such as Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, and Suriya’s Kanguva turned out as failures this year.
On the other hand, medium-budget movies like Karthi’s Meiyazhagan, Harish Kalyan’s Lubber Pandhu, Mari Selvaraj’s Vaazhai, and Jiiva’s Black ended up as surprise blockbusters this year.
This year’s biggest surprise was Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran, which was released as a Diwali special. It ended up as a huge blockbuster and collected almost 330 crores worldwide.
Amaran was the second highest-grossing movie of the year in Kollywood, and Sivakarthikeyan officially entered the big league with this movie. With Amaran, Sivakarthikeyan also defeated Rajinikanth in box office collections this year.
Despite Tamil movies, some other language movies also became blockbusters in Tamil Nadu. Malayalam movies such as Manjummel Boys, Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham, and Premalu were super hits in Tamil Nadu.
Manjummel Boys has collected almost 65 crores in Tamil Nadu, while Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham and Premalu collected 10 crores in the Tamil Nadu box office.
Telugu movies such as Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD, Dulquer Salman’s Lucky Baskhar, and Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 were super hits in Tamil Nadu box office collections this year.
This year in Kollywood, except for Vijay, no big stars’ movies worked well, but next year, all the big stars’ movies look promising.
Vijay’s last movie in H Vinoth’s direction, Ajith Kumar has two movies, Vidaamuyarchi and Good Bad Ugly, Rajinikanth has Coolie in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s direction, Kamal Haasan has Thug Life in Mani Ratnam’s direction, and Suriya has multiple releases next year.
Let us see whether the big stars of Kollywood will make a massive comeback next year.
