Hyundai India is all-set to launch the new Exter in the Indian market. The sub-4m compact SUV will take on the likes of Tata Punch and the newly launched Maruti Suzuki Fronx. Hyundai has announced that the upcoming Exter will be available with six airbags as standard.

It will be the first and only sub-4m SUV in the Indian market to offer six airbags as standard across all the variants. Hyundai also says that the upcoming vehicle will have 26 safety features across all variants and as an option in the entry-level E and S trims.

The safety features include ESC (Electronic Stability Control), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), HAC (Hill Assist Control), 3-Point Seat Belt & seatbelt reminder (all seats), ABS with EBD, Burglar Alarm (1st in Segment) and more.

The Exter will also be the only car in the segment to offer features like built-in dashboard camera and TPMS. Other advanced safety features include ISOFIX anchors, headlamp escort function, rear parking camera and others.

Speaking on the announcement, Mr. Tarun Garg, COO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., said,

“As a leading Smart Mobility Solutions provider, it is our endeavor to elevate customer experiences with cars that redefine mobility benchmarks. Hyundai EXTER exemplifies this vision with an unparalleled bouquet of advanced and standard safety features. We are delighted to announce that Hyundai EXTER is India’s 1st Sub 4-meter SUV that is equipped with 6-Airbags as standard. Also, with over 40 advanced safety features*, Hyundai EXTER bolsters the resilient confidence commanded by our SUV line-up and redefines a new benchmark for customers in India.”

Exter spotted testing on snow

The upcoming Hyundai Exter is poised to become the most capable vehicle in its segment, with Hyundai likely to equip it with terrain modes and other traction-based features that enhance its capabilities. Teasers from Hyundai have indicated that this compact SUV will excel on various types of terrain.

Recent spy shots of the Exter SUV, captured by Moto.ES, suggest that it will adopt a boxy and upright stance similar to the Venue but in a smaller size. Despite heavy camouflage, certain design elements have been discernible, such as the split headlamp assembly resembling the Venue, featuring LED daytime running lights and LED projectors in the top-end trims. Additionally, higher variants of the Exter are expected to offer appealing features like 15-inch machined alloy wheels, roof rails, LED inserts in the tail lamps, and a single-pane sunroof.

Petrol-only engines

The Exter is expected to be powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, delivering 83 PS of power and 114 Nm of torque. It will come with a standard 5-speed manual gearbox, and there might be an option for a 5-speed AMT. Additionally, there are possibilities that Hyundai will offer the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Venue as an alternative for higher trim levels.

In the sub-compact SUV market, the Hyundai Exter will compete with rivals such as the Tata Punch and Citroen C3, as well as lower-spec naturally-aspirated variants of other compact SUVs like the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
