Two prisoners playing 'vaanar' in Ram Leela escape Haridwar jail in 'search' of Sita

NEW DELHI: Two prisoners, who were participating in the yearly Ram Leela performance at Roshanabad jail in Haridwar, escaped from the prison on Friday.
The inmates were playing the roles of ‘Vaanar’ (monkey) and went to “search” Lord Sita. While Sita was eventually found, the prisoners never returned.

As per media reports, inmates Pankaj and Rajkumar, who fled jail, were in for murder and kidnapping.
Rajkumar and Pankaj allegedly escaped the jail by jumping over the boundary wall.
The jail authorities came to know about the incident at around 8 pm on Friday. CCTV footage showed that both fled the jail using a ladder.
For the past three years, the Haridwar Jail has been organizing Ramlila performances annually during the Navratri festival.
