On Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Stephanie Grisham, the former press secretary for Donald Trump, took the stage to deliver a scathing critique of her former boss while publicly endorsing Kamala Harris. Grisham, who served as White House Press Secretary from July 2019 to April 2020, reflected on her shift from being a staunch Trump supporter to becoming a vocal critic.
Grisham accused Trump of lacking morals and mocked his supporters off-camera, allegedly referring to them as “basement dwellers.” She recounted a pivotal moment after the January 6 Capitol riots, revealing that she had urged Melania Trump to tweet in favor of peaceful protests. When Melania refused, Grisham decided it was time to step down.
“I wasn’t just a Trump supporter, I was a true believer. I was one of his closest advisers,” Grisham said during her speech. “Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters. He calls them basement dwellers. He has no empathy, no morals, and no fidelity to the truth.”

Grisham also described the events of January 6, saying, “I asked Melania if we could at least tweet that, while peaceful protest is the right of every American, there’s no place for lawlessness or violence. She replied with one word, ‘No.’” Following this exchange, Grisham became the first senior staffer in the Trump Administration to resign after the Capitol riots.
“I love my country more than my party,” Grisham continued. “Kamala Harris tells the truth. She respects the American people, and she has my vote.”

Grisham’s speech marked a significant moment at the convention, as she is one of the few Republicans to address the Democratic gathering. Ahead of her remarks, the 48-year-old urged GOP voters to join her in ensuring Trump never returns to the White House. “I never thought I’d be speaking at a Democratic convention,” Grisham stated. “But, after seeing firsthand who Donald Trump really is, and the threat he poses to our country, I feel very strongly about speaking out.”
