Tragic Death of 16-Year-Old After Quack Treatment Sparks Medical Council Action in Telangana, ET HealthWorld

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Medical Council (TGMC) has taken suo motu action following the death of a 16-year-old girl during treatment for fever by a quack in Suryapet district and directed its quackery and legal committee to inspect the clinic and submit a report for further action.

The incident took place almost a week ago but came to light on Saturday as it happened in a remote area — Enakunta Thanda in Suryapet district.

TGMC registrar Dr D Lalaiah Kumar said the girl had been suffering from fever for two days before she went to the quack. “The quack Saraiah gave her two injections and saline solution, after which she complained of severe stomach pain and vomiting. She succumbed soon after,” said Dr Lalaiah Kumar, adding that the incident happened because of Saraiah’s treatment.

“The quack has been illegally practising modern medicine without any MBBS qualification and posing as a genuine doctor. The TGMC has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and has asked the Legal and Anti-Quackery Committee to conduct an inquiry and submit a report and then FIR will be lodged based on the report,” said the TGMC registrar.

“People, especially in remote villages, usually seek treatment from quacks. The quack was not qualified to treat patients. As of now, it is not clear what medicine or injection was given to the girl. Generally, quacks give paracetamol, dexona or steroid injections to treat fever cases,” said Dr Naresh Kumar, TGMC member, Warangal unit, who is part of the inspection team.

Meanwhile, this is the fourth such case to come to light in recent months. In July this year, a seven-month pregnant woman died during an abortion performed by a quack in Mancherial. Earlier, a patient in Warangal died of complications after a quack administered an injection into the muscle instead of the vein. In another case in Wardhannapet, a man died after a quack administered seven injections in one hour, leading to his death.
