NEW DELHI:BJP MPs expressed concerns following the suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, with BJP MP Tejasvi Surya calling for reforms to address gender biases and prevent future tragedies.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya expressed deep sorrow over Subhash’s death, describing it as “extremely unfortunate.”
Speaking outside the Lok Sabha, Surya said the incident highlighted the pressing need to review family-related legislation in India, particularly to introduce gender neutrality.
Tejasvi said, while speaking to PTI, “It’s not the first time that the country has discussed the misuse of family legislations. I am sure that all state governments and the policymakers have taken note of this unfortunate incident, and more reforms will follow in all of these aspects.”
He added, “I think the time has also come for us to review many of these family-related legislations and also introduce, wherever possible, an aspect of gender neutrality so as to protect both partners in a marriage. The family is a very important institution. It is the founding block of the society. And legislations that can be misused by one partner can be a detriment to the very institution of family and will have very strong social repercussions if not addressed.”
Reacting to the case, Actor-turned-politician and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut said, “I am shocked. His video is heart-wrenching. The case is infested with communism, socialism, and feminism,”
Ranaut condemned the alleged extortion, stating that the demand for Rs 3 crore to settle legal cases was “beyond his capacity.”
She however also cautioned against using one woman’s alleged wrongdoings to generalize and punish other women. “Nevertheless, we cannot use the example of a wrong woman to torture other women. In 99% of the marriages, the men are at fault,” she said.
BJP MP Jagadish Shettar also condemned the incident, urging the state government to take the matter seriously. “This is unfortunate, and the state government must take it seriously. The culprits should be punished, and a thorough investigation is necessary,” Shettar said.
Subhash, 34, reportedly died by suicide after alleging continuous harassment from his estranged wife and her family. A FIR was filed, naming Subhash’s wife Nikita, her mother Nisha, her brother Anurag, and her uncle Sushil Singhania, who face charges of abetment to suicide and joint criminal liability.
Subhash’s brother, Bikas Kumar, claimed that the in-laws had been exploiting Subhash and demanding large sums of money—Rs 3 crore to settle legal disputes and Rs 30 lakh for visitation rights to Subhash’s four-year-old son.
In a 24-page suicide note, Subhash described years of alleged harassment, false legal accusations, and even accused a family court judge in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, of bias and corruption. His note, filled with distress, repeatedly stated, “Justice is Due,” and included a request for his ashes not to be immersed until justice was served.
