Thug Life box office collection day 4: Mani Ratnam’s gangster thriller, with Kamal Haasan in the lead, isn’t creating the magic it was expected to at the domestic box office. After opening at half of what Haasan and Ratnam’s last couple of films have opened to, Thug Life dropped to single digits over the weekend, and has only dipped further on its first Sunday.
Thug Life opening weekend collection
Thug Life collected Rs 6.50 crore in India on Sunday, its fourth day at the box office. This is less than its earnings on Friday and Saturday at Rs 7.15 crore and Rs 7.75 crore respectively. Signs of slowing down were the most apparent on Friday as the numbers of Thug Life dropped to half after its opening day earnings of Rs 15.5 crore.
As per Sacnilk, the current domestic box office collection of Thug Life across all languages after the first four days stands at Rs 36.90 crore. While it’s breached the Rs 35 crore mark, that’s just a patch on the figures of Haasan and Ratnam’s last two films, all of which earned as much in less than two days.
Thug Life box office vs Indian 2
Haasan’s last release, S Shankar’s vigilante film Indian 2, opened to Rs 30.25 crore across all languages and earned Rs 62.5 crore within the first four days. Haasan’s 2022 action thriller Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, also opened at Rs 32.05 crore and also entered the Rs 100 crore club within the first four days.
Thug Life box office vs Ponniyin Selvan 2
Meanwhile, Ratnam’s last directorial, the 2023 period drama Ponniyin Selvan: II, opened at Rs 34 crore and crossed Rs 100 crore within the opening weekend. Just like its successor, Ponniyin Selvan: I opened at Rs 28.45 crore and earned over Rs 100 crore in its first four days the previous year.
Thug Life occupancy
Given the weekend, Thug Life registered the maximum occupancy on Sunday in the evening (39.43%), followed by afternoon (37.96%), night (29.43%), and morning (22.17%). The native Tamil version made for the lion’s share in the Sunday earnings, followed by the Hindi and Telugu dubbed ones.
While Thug Life competes with Tarun Mansukhani’s ensemble whodunit comedy Housefull 5 in the Hindi market, it’ll soon face fresh competition from Krish Jagarlamudi and Jyothi Krishna’s action film Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 in the Telugu belt. The Pawan Kalyan and Bobby Deol-starrer will release in cinemas this Thursday on June 12.

Thug Life controversy
A big blow for Thug Life also came in the form of it not releasing in Karnataka. The makers told Karnataka High Court they are not willing to screen the movie in Karnataka, unless there is a dialogue or a trialogue involving the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. The court criticised Haasan for his recent remark suggesting “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” and observed that a “single apology could have resolved the situation.”
