The Phoenician Scheme trailer: After surviving his sixth recorded airplane crash, Zsa-Zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), one of the richest men in Europe, appoints his only daughter, Liesl (Mia Threapleton), a nun, as the sole heir to his estate. Interestingly, Korda made this decision by overlooking his nine sons. But why? And that too despite not sharing a close bond with his daughter? Notably, they hadn’t even met in six years before this new development. “I have my reasons,” he replies to her question, though he hesitates to elaborate. Yet, it soon becomes clear that he has a motive, and it is related to The Phoenician Scheme.
The trailer for auteur director Wes Anderson’s upcoming movie is here, sparking just as much intrigue as his previous films have. While the 144-second promo begins by offering glimpses of Korda’s empire and family dynamics, it soon reveals that his current objective is to “disrupt, obstruct, impede and cripple Cortis Enterprise in any manner possible.” For this, he needs the help of his nun daughter. The trailer also shows that Liesl isn’t as noble as she seems and has a dark side of her own.

As the video progresses, we get a clearer view of the espionage film’s chiseled, chaotic world, bathed in the iconic Wes Anderson aesthetic, featuring many sketchy characters. With a blend of crime and comedy, the trailer suggests that the director is aiming for his most ambitious project yet here.
Speaking about it during the movie’s early stages in 2023, Anderson told Le Monde: “My next feature film will be linear, with Benicio Del Toro in every shot. I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and, let’s say, with a rather dark tone.”
Also starring Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend and Hope Davis, The Phoenician Scheme’s story is written jointly by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola. The movie will receive a limited premiere on May 30, with a broader release scheduled for June 6.
