    The Legend of Maula Jatt

The Legend of Maula Jatt was set to be the first Pakistani film in 13 years to get released in Indian theatres. However, amidst strong opposition, the Fawad Khan starrer might never get its big-screen release in India.

The 2022 Pakistani film gained high praise and popularity which led to Zee Studios releasing the film in India on October 2. The film got a green light from the Indian government and the Censor Board but sparked a controversy.

Political parties opposed the release of the film and even threatened actions against the theatres where it would be screened. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray claimed that the movie will not be released in his state.

Thackeray believes the film coming out so close to the Navratri festival will become a reason for conflict in the country. He further requested the government to impose a nationwide ban citing Pakistan has also done the same to Indian films.

There is significant demand in both countries to view cinema from different cultures and regions. However, after Thackeray’s remarks, the release of the film might raise concerns for the safety and security of theatres and audiences.

It is an unfortunate incident as films, which are meant to transcend borders, are becoming the victim of political tensions.
