Understanding the durability of the protection conferred by SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination is of utmost importance to guide COVID-19 mitigation policies worldwide. In November, 2021, before the emergence of the omicron (B.1.1.529) variant, an estimated 3·8 billion people (44% of the global population) had been infected by SARS-CoV-2.
