Tata Altroz becomes India’s most affordable car with a sunroof

Sunroofs have become one of the most important creature comfort features in cars in India, and most recently, one of the largest carmakers in the country, Tata Motors, started offering it with its premium hatchback, Altroz iCNG. Now, in an attempt to further lure in more buyers, the company has announced that it will be offering the single-pane electric sunroof across all powertrain options of the Altroz model. This new feature addition to the petrol and diesel Altroz makes the model the most affordable car in the country to offer a sunroof.

Tata Motors is offering the Altroz models with the added sunroof, starting with the mid-spec XM+S trim, which starts at Rs 7.90. Additionally, the diesel XM+S variant starts at Rs 9.25 lakh. According to the company, the electric sunroof will be offered in a total of 16 variations with petrol, turbo-petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas (CNG) powertrains. The cost of the sunroof-equipped vehicles might be up to Rs 45,000 more than that of the standard vehicles, depending on the variation you select. Now, the Altroz comes with a sunroof even in the Dark version as well.

At the moment, the only other hatchback in the country that offers a sunroof is the South Korean carmaker Hyundai’s i20. However, unlike Tata Motors, which is offering the sunroof from mid-spec variants, the i20 only gets a sunroof in the top-of-the-line Asta and Asta (O) variants. Apart from the sunroof, the company has also announced that it will be offering a few new features like a wireless charger, an air purifier, and leatherette upholstery on all the powertrain options of the Altroz. The company, however, added that these premium features will only be offered in the top-spec XZ+(S) and XZ+O(S) variants.

Speaking of powertrains, the Altroz is offered with four different options. These include a 1.5-liter diesel engine that produces 89 BHP and 200 Nm, a 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine that produces 109 BHP and 140 Nm, and a 1.2-liter petrol engine that produces 87 BHP and 115 Nm. All engines come standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the 1.2-liter petrol engine with the naturally aspirated engine has a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as an option. The company also recently introduced the iCNG iteration of the car, which is powered by the 1.2L Revotron engine, generating a maximum power of 73.5 PS and a torque of 103 Nm.

The Altroz iCNG is the first car in India to feature the innovative twin-cylinder CNG technology developed by Tata Motors. In terms of safety measures with the new CNG technology, the Altroz iCNG features a micro-switch to keep the car switched off during refueling. The vehicle is also equipped with thermal incident protection, which shuts off the CNG supply to the engine and releases petrol into the environment as a safety measure. Additionally, the enhanced rear body structure and 6-point mounting system for the CNG tanks provide additional rear crash safety for the Altroz iCNG. The Altroz iCNG also comes with an industry-first advanced Single ECU and features Direct Start in CNG mode.
