Ahead of the first Assembly session of the year, scheduled to commence on January 6, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker M. Appavu called on Governor R.N. Ravi at the Raj Bhavan here on Friday and invited him to deliver the Governor’s address in the House.
The first session of the Assembly in a calendar year commences with the customary Governor’s address to the House. Once the Governor completes his address in English, the Speaker reads out the Tamil version.
During the past two years, the day of the Governor’s address to the House has witnessed some unprecedented and unpleasant incidents underlining the widening gap between the Governor and the Chief Minister. Though the two have not been on the same page on multiple issues concerning the DMK government, the choice of Ministers, prevalence of drugs among students and youth, among others, they have have continued to discharge their official duties on occasions such as the Republic Day celebrations.
The 234-member Assembly has one seat vacant since the death of Congress leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan on December 14. He represented the Erode East Assembly constituency in the House.
