In a recent conversation between filmmakers Karan Johar, Pa Ranjith, Zoya Akhtar, Vetri Maaran, and Mahesh Narayanan, challenges faced by Indian cinema, particularly Bollywood, were brought to light. Together they discussed the slow and rather lackluster performance of Bollywood despite the success of some films in recent years.
Karan Johar stressed that the main reason for this slow progress was the reluctance of actors, particularly big stars, to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. He said that actors need to be much more experimental and innovative with their roles and respect the director’s way as well, rather than pushing the film towards their own narrative.

The filmmakers also praised actors like Rajinikanth and Mammootty, who despite being huge names themselves, do not hesitate to take on new roles and step out of their comfort zone. Mammootty was praised particularly for his role as a middle-aged homosexual man in Jeo Baby’s “Kaathal – The Core”, released in 2023.
Mammootty not only challenged societal traditions and norms with his role in Kaathal but also highlighted the challenges faced by a community still considered to be marginalised in today’s Indian society. Such roles always push the boundaries of conventional cinema and are often well-received by the public.
