The report titled “Student suicides: An epidemic sweeping India,” released recently, reveals a concerning rise in student suicides across the country.
According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), student suicides in India have been increasing by 4% each year over the past two decades, which is double the national average for overall suicides, which have grown by only 2% annually.

In 2022, male students accounted for 53% of the total student suicides, although their numbers decreased by 6% from the previous year.
Meanwhile, female student suicides increased by 7% during the same period.

Over the last decade, the number of student suicides has more than doubled, rising from 6,654 cases in 2012 to 13,044 in 2022.
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh are the states with the highest number of student suicides, collectively making up one-third of the national total.

Southern states and union territories contribute 29% of these cases. The report also highlights that Rajasthan, known for its intense academic environment in coaching hubs like Kota, ranks 10th in student suicides.
The report emphasizes that the actual number of student suicides might be underreported due to social stigma and legal issues surrounding suicide. The lack of a robust data collection system, particularly in rural areas, further complicates accurate reporting.
This report stresses the need for educational institutions to focus more on the mental health of students and well-being rather than just pushing them to compete.
There is an urgent need for a systematic approach to career and college counseling within schools to better support students and help prevent such tragedies.
