People are complaining about several scenes from the popular show ‘The White Lotus’ being cut out in the Indian version. For example a scene where a character hides behind an idol of Buddha and prays to him is removed from Jio Hotstar. Fans are not very happy about this incident.
People have shared their concern for what censorship will take away from the Oscar Winning ‘Anora’ once it comes to Jio Hotstar as well.

The outrage from fans is totally understandable. It is natural to be disappointed if viewers do not get to experience the version intended by the director.
But we can not blame it all on Jio Hotstar too. Recently the OTT guidelines in India have been reviewed and more restrictions have been put up. Any discrepancy from that might bring heavy consequences. The Samay Raina case has also contributed on the public demand of ‘purification’ of OTT platforms and removal of objectionable scenes.

Jio Hotstar has to play safe and abide by the guidelines and do justice to the integrity of the content as far as possible. And for some of the movies and shows, viewers will have to make a little compromise till Indian OTT becomes a more open and tolerant space.
