“Kenyan health authorities are probing a mysterious illness that has afflicted over 90 schoolgirls, leading to their hospitalization,” the Africa News has reported.
Girls experienced difficulty in walking
As per the media report, girls experienced difficulty in walking and showed “symptoms of knee pain”.
So far, blood samples, urine, and stool samples of the girls have been sent to the laboratories in Kisumu and Nairobi.
“The students were seen trembling on their hospital beds while others walked while staggering,” Tuko reported.
The school has been closed
In view of the health condition of the students, the authorities of the St Theresa Eregi Girls High School have closed the school. “The school administration and government officials agreed to a temporary break for Form One, Two, and Three students until the situation was assessed,” the media reported.
Is it due to electrolyte imbalance?
Local reports have said, citing laboratory reports, that the illness could be due to loss of fluid and electrolyte imbalance in the body. Electrolyte imbalance occurs when the mineral content of the body is too low or too high. The common signs of electrolyte imbalance are dry mouth and thirst, restlessness, confusion or difficulty with cognition, muscle weakness or spasms, numbness or tingling, fatigue, heart palpitations, nausea or vomiting, slow or irregular heart rate, and low or high blood pressure.
