Stock Market Holiday: NSE, BSE open or closed on Bakrid?

Stock Market Holiday: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will each close for one day in June 2024. Specifically, both exchanges will close on June 17 to observe Bakri Id. The BSE has announced that trading activities in the Equity, Equity Derivative, SLB, Currency Derivatives, and Interest Rate Derivatives sectors would be halted on this day.

The NSE allows trading activities throughout the year to provide a smooth trading experience. During normal weekday trading hours, traders have a 6-hour and 15-minute window from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Notably, trade holidays are observed on both Saturdays and Sundays, with no trading activity occurring in the stocks, equity derivatives, or SLB divisions.

In addition to weekends, the NSE holiday calendar covers other national and cultural holidays. In June 2024, the NSE will likewise close for one day, June 17, to honour Bakri Id.

What is Eid-ul-Adha/Bakrid?

Eid-ul-Adha is known as Bakrid in India. The day honours Prophet Ibrahim’s (also known as Abraham’s) sacrifice. It is said that God tested him by asking him to sacrifice his own son.

Every year, Muslims honour Ibrahim’s commitment with Eid-ul-Adha. It is remembered by sacrificing a lamb or animal, which is subsequently divided into three pieces. One piece is kept at home, with the remaining two portions donated to the poor and needy.
