Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Highlights, Asia Cup 2023: SL beat BAN by 21 runs in Super 4 encounter

Top class effort by the substitute fielder Dushan Hemantha as Nasum Ahmed swings hard at a pitched up delivery by Theekshana. The fielder makes an excellent effort and grabs a stunner, before showing great presence of mind and releasing the ball before he fell over the boundary ropes. However, the third umpire signals it for a six. TV replay shows that his foot had touched the ropes before the brilliant effort.

Meanwhile, Pathirana wraps up the show in the next over as he cleans up Nasum Ahmed for run a ball 15. Bangladesh are bundled out for 236 in 48.1 overs as Sri Lanka win by 21 runs.

Pathirana cleans up Shoriful Islam for run a ball 7 with a full delivery, angling in from round the wicket. 

Two boundaries also come from the over as BAN reach 224/9 in 47 overs. They need 34 runs in 18 balls

Theekshana strikes twice in same over as Taskin Ahmed is trapped LBW for 1(3). 

Sri Lanka are two wickets away from win as Bangladesh reach 200-8 in 44 overs.

Towhid Hridoy connects a back of a length ball by Pathirana for a boundary through backward point. Seven runs come in the over. 

Theekshana comes to bowl the next over and he starts with a over the waist height no-ball, following which the freehit is smashed for a six by Towhid Hridoy.

Theekshana responds with a wicket, traps him LBW in the next delivery. The batter takes a review but umpire’s call comes into play as the balltracker showed the ball brushing the stumps. Hridoy falls for 82(97). BAN 197/7 (43.2 overs)

Theekshana strikes as Shamim Hossain is trapped LBW for 5(10)

Towhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain have kept things moving at a good rate so far. The pair accumulate 25 runs in 22 balls, as Bangladesh require 78 in the final nine overs. BAN 180-5 (41 overs)

13 runs from the Maheesh Thikshana over! Just what the doctor ordered for Bangladesh after losing the wicket of Mushfiqur. Hridoy is keeping Bangladesh in the hunt with his depth touches.

OUT! What a night Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka is having with the ball in hand. Realising that they needed a boundary, Mushfiqur gave the charge. He wanted to go over mid-off. His idea was right but the execution wasn’t. A good diving catch by Kasun Rajitha. Mushfiqur walks back for 29, Shanaka has his third of the night.

Good over by Wellalage, only 2 from it. Bangladesh need a move on here. The asking rate is climbing.

An expensive over by Matheesha Pathirana as 10 runs come from the over. BAN: 149/4 (35 overs)

Mushfiqur and Hridoy continue to deal in singles and doubles as four runs come in Kasun Rajitha’s seventh over. BAN: 139/4 (34 overs)

Wellalage keeps it tight from his end as three runs come from his over. But this won’t help Sri Lanka’s case as they need a wicket. BAN: 135/4 (33 overs)

A good move by Sri Lanka as Kasun Rajitha is reintroduced in the attack. He gives away three singles, and either sides won’t mind that. BAN: 132/4 (32 overs)

A welcome boundary for Bangladesh as it comes after a vey long time. Towhid Hridoy sweeps a straight ball by Wellalage, which races away for a four towards backward square-leg. BAN: 129/4 (3 overs)

Sri Lanka have opted for spin from both ends as 10 runs come in the last two overs. BAN: 117/4 (29 overs)

As Sri Lanka search for another wicket, Towhid Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim are doing some rebuilding for Bangladesh. The boundaries have dried up and they are focusing on strike rotation. BAN 107/4 (27 overs)

Wellalage bowls a maiden over.

Dhananjaya de Silva comes into the attack from the other end. He starts with a three-run over. BAN: 94/4 (24 overs)

Wellalage strikes as Litton Das is caught for 15(24).

Bangladesh have completely lost the early momentum as Towhid Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim stare at an uphill task in front of them. The pair are new in the middle and have just added 8 runs in 19 overs. BAN 91/4 (22 overs)

Matheesha Pathirana joins the party as Bangladesh lose three wickets in quick succession. Shakid edges the ball, which is collected by the wicketkeeper, however, the umpire isn’t interested. SL immediately go for a -review and UltraEdge confirms a nick. Shakib falls cheaply for 3(7). BAN 73-3 (16 overs)

There was a LBW appeal against Shakib Al Hasan later in Shanaka’s over, following which they take a review. However, the ball was pitched outside the leg stump line so Sri Lanka lose a review.

Dunith Wellalage gives five runs in the next overs as BAN reach 65/2 in 15 overs. 

Dunith Wellalage is introduced in the attack and he gives just two singles in his first over. 

Shanaka continues from the other end and has now got rid of Mohammad Naim, who is surprised by the extra bounce. Decides to turn away from the ball, but gets a top edge in the process. The ball skies up in the air before settling in Kusal Mendis’ gloves. Naim falls for 21(46). 

Dasun Shanaka gets Sri Lanka the first breakthrough as Mehidy Hasan Miraz departs for 28(29). Goes for a pull against back of a length delivery and connects it with the top portion of his bat, which ends up being a simple catch for substitute fielder Hemantha at short mid-wicket. 

Litton Das is the new batter in as BAN reach 57/1 in 12 overs.

Matheesha Pathirana is introduced in the attack but Mehidy keeps the scoreboard ticking. He hits the pacer for a boundary as eight runs come in the over. BAN 55-0 (11 overs)

Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz help Bangladesh muster 47 runs in the first powerplay. They need another 211 runs in 40 overs. BAN: 47/0 (10 overs)

Shanaka also keeps it tight from the other end but the next over by Mehidy welcomes Rajitha with a boundary in the next over, which results in eight overs. BAN: 37-0 (7 overs)

A good over by Kasun Rajitha as just one single come from it. BAN: 28-0 (5 overs)

Sri Lanka introduce medium-pacer Dasun Shanaka in the third over and starts with a full and wide delivery, which is driven beautifully by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, following which the batters run three. 

Mohammad Naim also gathers a double in the final ball of the over, which was swinging into the pads. But with that pace Naim has no difficulties in flicking it towards backward square leg. 

Bangladesh reach 27/0 in 4 overs.

An outside edge off Mohammad Naim’s bat goes wide of the slip fielder and races away to the boundary fence. 

A total of eight runs come in the over. BAN: 20-0 (3 overs)

Kasun Rajitha starts with an economical over as three runs come in the over. 

Maheesh Theekshana will share the new ball duties with Rajitha. He is hit for a couple of boundaries by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. BAN 12-0 (2 overs) 

Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz arrive in the middle to start the 258-run chase. 

Kasun Rajitha will open the attack for Sri Lanka.

Dunith Wellalage is run-out for run a ball three as 9 runs come in the 49th over. 

The final over Taskin Ahmed results in two wickets as Theekshana falls for 2(3) in the first delivery. He then gets Samarawickrama in the final ball, who is caught by substitute fielder Afif Hossain for 93(72). 

Sri Lanka post 257/9 in 50 overs. 

Samarawickrama hits Shakib for a boundary as 11 runs come in his over. Two overs remain, and SL will look to reach 260 at least. SL 237-6 (48 overs) 

No boundaries come in the over but Sri Lanka still manage to gather five runs in Shakib’s over.

Hasan Mahmud cleans up Dasun Shanka for 24(32) in the next over. SL 226-6 (47 overs)

Samarawickrama hits Taskin Ahmed for a boundary as Sri Lanka cross 200. 

Shakib then bowls a four-run over as Bangladesh reach SL 206-5 in 44 overs.

A well played knock by Samarawickrama as he completes his half-century in 45 balls. 

SL are still in a tough position as they have piled 193-5 runs in 42 overs. SL: 42 (overs)

Hasan Mahmud strikes as Sri Lanka lose half their side. Dhananjaya de Silva is the batter, who departs after being caught-behind for 6(16). SL 171-5 (38 overs)

Taskin Ahmed concedes five runs in his over. Shakib then follows it up with a three-run over. SL 153-4 (35 overs)

Taskin Ahmed gets rid of Asalanka, who is out caught for 10(23). Shakib takes the catch at mid-on. 

Dhananjaya de Silva is the new batter in as Shakib comes to bowl the next over and gives away just one single. SL 145-4 (33 overs)

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka have to do some rescue work here. 

Despite losing two quick wickets, they have kept the scoreboard ticking by scoring briskly. They have taken the total to 140-3 in 31 overs.  

Nasum Ahmed gives away four singles in the over and Shoriful Islam is invited with a boundary, but he also strikes later in the over as Kusal Mendis falls right after completing his half-century. SL: 121-3 (26 overs) 

Shoriful Islam provides Bangladesh with the first breakthrough as Nissanka is trapped LBW for 40(60). The batter immediately opts for a review but TV replay confirms the ball was hitting the batter’s pads in the line of the stumps and crashing it. 

Sadeera Samarawickrama is the new batter in the middle. SL: 109/2 (24 overs)

Shoriful Islam is back into the attack and there’s a chance in the first ball itself but Mohammad Naim fails to judge the ball at the backward square-leg region. He was stationed slightly inside and not close the boundary ropes and the ball travels over him for a six. 

There was an edge as well later in the over, but with no slips placed it beats the wicketkeeper and runs to the boundary. 

Nasum Ahmed then concedes five runs in the next over as SL reach 108/1 in 23 overs. 

Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka stitch 50-plus stand as Sri Lanka reach 85/1 in 19 overs. 

Nasum Ahmed then follows it up with a maiden over.

Shakib Al Hasan concedes five runs in the next over as SL reach 70/1 in 15 overs.

Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka are doing the rebuilding after Dimuth Karunaratne’s early blow. They have added 28 runs in 45 balls, taking Sri Lanka’s total to 62/1 in 13 overs. 

Mendis is on six off 14, Nissanka on 20 off 23. Probably Sri Lanka’s two best batters out there now and they have looked unperturbed thus far.

Mahmud goes full around off for the third ball of the eighth and Nissanka drives it on the up past point. Then he hits the fourth ball over point.

Hasan Mahmud gets the breakthrough for Bangladesh. He was cracked for two fours off the last two balls and then he comes back with a back of a length delivery that pitched on leg and then seamed and swung away. Utter nightmare for the batter who took a waft at it, only to edge it to the wicketkeeper.

A four off the first ball of the second over, which had to be re-bowled before that as Shoriful Islam had sent it wide down the leg side. Karunaratne had hit that and Nissanka had got a boundary off the second last ball of the first over.

The two sets of players have made their way back after the anthems have been played. The two Sri Lankan openers and the Bangladesh players make their way out.

Bangladesh win toss, choose to bowl first

Bangladesh’s batting has not been too impressive in this tournament. Just to make matters worse Nazmul Shanto, who scored a hundred and an 89, has been s ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring niggle.

Don’t let this sun fool you. Rain is in the forecast later in the evening so messrs Duckworth, Lewis and Stern will almost certainly have a say in how this game goes.

For now at least. It’s bright and sunny in Colombo this afternoon. If this game is washed out, the teams will share points.

There is a lot of backlash about the India vs Pakistan game in the Super 4 being the only match getting a reserve day. This has come from Indian and Pakistani sides as much as it has from Sri Lanka or Bangladesh. After a rather scathing assessment of the situation by Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusinghe both the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka cricket boards put out identical statements saying that this has been done with their consent. All very unfortunate and murky.

Sri Lanka may have won both their matches but they exposed their problems far more than anything. They first struggled to chase down 165 against Bangladesh and then almost allowed Afghanistan to gun down 292 in 37.1 overs, which would have led to them being knocked out of the tournament.

It hasn’t been the best of tournaments for Bangladesh. The three-time runners-up had a disastrous start against Sri Lanka but recovered quickly to cruise past Afghanistan. Just as it looked like the side had gained momentum, one of their in-form batters – Nazmul Shanto – faced injury and was ruled out of the Super 4 game against Pakistan. The side will now seek a quick recovery and aim to remain alive in contention for Super 4

In their previous match in the 2023 edition, Sri Lanka outclassed Bangladesh by five wickets after bundling the side out on 165. Against Afghanistan, Dasun Shanaka’s men had a close shave, as a gross miscalculation from their opponents played key to Sri Lanka’s 2-run win. The momentum is undoubtedly with the hosts as they enter their first Super 4 game
