Sniper rifle among 35 weapons recovered in Manipur

GUWAHATI

A sniper rifle was among 35 weapons recovered in a series of joint operations by the security forces in Manipur since January 19, 2025.

A statement by the Defence said the Army, the paramilitary Assam Rifles, and State Police personnel recovered a modified sniper rifle, five 9mm pistols, two single-barrel rifles, grenades, ammunition, and war-like stores during an operation in the Lungkhongjang ridge in Bishnupur district on January 19, 2025.

The second operation by the Army, the Central Reserve Police Force, and police personnel on January 20 yielded several weapons, including a 9mm sub-machine gun, a mortar, and a grenade launcher. This operation was near the Khuga river on the border between the Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts.

In the first of two more operations on January 20, a person associated with the outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup was caught on the India-Myanmar border in the Tengnoupal district. In the second, Assam Rifles personnel recovered an improvised projectile launcher among other arms during a search operation at Maoching in the Noney district.

On January 23, Assam Rifles personnel recovered some firearms, grenades, and ammunition from the general area of Ngamukhong Fungi Ching (Leingangpokpi) in the Thoubal district. In another operation with the police, they caught two members of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) from an area between Thoubal’s Heirok and Wangjing.

More weapons, ammunition, and war-like stores were recovered from an area between Zairawn and Uchatol in the Jiribam district on January 23, Chandel and Imphal West districts on January 24, and Thangjao Mamang Ching in the Kakching district and Sekmai in the Imphal West district on January 25.

“Success could be achieved in these operations due to the seamless cooperation between the security forces and other law enforcement agencies,” the statement said.
