Goa, known for its lively New Year celebrations, feels strangely quiet this festive season. Viral videos showing empty beaches and streets have left people wondering why the state is no longer buzzing with tourists.
Several issues have led to this situation. High transport, hotel, and food costs have made Goa unaffordable for many travelers. The problem is worsened by taxi operators who charge very high fares and don’t allow app-based taxi services like Ola and Uber. Tourists have often complained about being overcharged, which has hurt Goa’s image.

International tourism has also dropped sharply. Wars like the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Israel-Palestine crisis have reduced visitors from these regions. Goa had nearly 9.4 lakh foreign tourists in 2019, but in 2023, this number fell to just 4.03 lakh.
Meanwhile, many travelers now prefer cheaper, visa-free destinations like Sri Lanka and Vietnam. These places offer similar experiences but at a lower cost, drawing tourists away from Goa.

Local businesses are calling for big changes to fix these problems. They want better transport options, lower costs, and improved tourist facilities. While more Indians are visiting Goa, foreign tourists who stay longer and spend more are essential for the state’s economy.
If things don’t change soon, Goa risks losing its place as India’s top beach destination.
