Bangladesh captain and most valuable player, Shakib Al Hasan, has sustained an unwanted injury just before the start of the much-awaited World Cup 2023. Shakib has injured his right heel while playing football in practice, which ruled him out of Bangladesh’s warm-up fixtures and the campaign opener against Afghanistan, scheduled for October 7 at Dharamshala.

The Bangladesh captain was missing at the toss ceremony before the ongoing warm-up fixture against Sri Lanka played at Guwahati. Meanwhile, it is being said that the maestro all-rounder got injured while playing football and his heel has got “a lot of swelling”.

In the last couple of days, the 36-year-old all-rounder has been in the middle of controversies after the whole sage between him and Tamim Iqbal, resulting in the latter’s axing from the World Cup squad.

Having said that, Bangladesh have selected a balanced yet inexperienced unit for the showpiece event, where Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad will be the national team’s backbone.

Shakib – Bangladesh’s mainstay in both batting and bowling – has played 240 ODIs, scoring 7384 runs and scalping over 300 wickets in the format. In the last edition of the World Cup, he finished as the third-highest run-getter with 606 runs in his bank.

The Tigers, currently playing their first warm-up match, will next face the defending champions England, in Guwahati on October 2 before they kickstart their campaign against Afghanistan.

This is a developing story…
