Toni Kroos was the oldest of Real Madrid’s golden midfield trio of the past decade. Casemiro is no longer at the club and Toni Kroos will leave next month, leaving Modric as the final standing cog of the previous generation.
Despite being 38 years of age, however, the Croatian star seems set to continue for another year. He has indeed seen a reduction in playing time this season, but he is determined to contribute to the club of his life as long as he has the magic left in his boots.
Speaking to TNT Sports in a recent interview, the Real Madrid legend commented on a number of topics ranging from his role in the team to the rapport he shared with younger players.
Modric began by revealing the special bond he shared with the team’s new signing Jude Bellingham and what he made of the Golden Boy.
“I speak a lot with Jude Bellingham. I think he has shown everyone what kind of talent and player he is, but what has surprised me the most about him is his mentality and work ethic, it’s second to none,” he said.
“He’s amazing, every training session, every game, he gives his 100%. His winning mentality is what surprised me.”
Elaborating on what impressed him the most about the former Borussia Dortmund star, Modric said:
“His football IQ is amazing, and he understands the game very well, but it’s not only that, if you need tackles he’s there, if you need to fight, he’s there. Amazing.”
Providing an overview of the connection he had with the younger players in the dressing room, the midfielder elaborated on how he guided them and helped them improve.
“We are here for them, to help them in any aspect, to show them how they have to behave, how they need to play. This club teaches you the winning mentality, we’re here to help,” said Modric.
“Of course, our role is changing, because the new generation is coming. We’re here to help but also to compete with them because this keeps you motivated, you want to demonstrate that you can still compete with them. I think this is good for the team,” he added on the competition.
Finally, Modric was asked what the secret behind his quality, passion and zeal for more was at his age, to which he said:
“For me, I think, it’s the love I have for the game, I enjoy every day, every moment of the training sessions. I work hard every day, I still feel physically and mentally really good.”
“It’s the dedication I have for football that maintains me at this level. I’m mentally strong, I’m convinced I can still do it at this level,” he concluded.
