Kolkata: A Sealdah court will deliver its verdict today afternoon at 2.30PM in the rape and murder of a Post Graduate Trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August last year. The verdict will be given by the designated judge of Sealdah court on January 18.

The crime had sparked nationwide protests, leading to a CBI investigation, which resulted in the arrest of former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh and former SHO Abhijit Mondal for evidence tampering.

Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy is the sole accused in the case for committing the heinous crime.

“We hope to get a good judgement after the court looks and considers everything. Reports established that there was presence of multiple DNAs, so how come Sanjay Rai is the lone criminal behind the crime? We think other persons are involved in the case. We have crossed one level of our fight. We have many miles to go. We are looking forward to a higher court for justice,” victim’s father said.

“Various experts said that Sanjay cannot be the sole accused in the case,” the victim’s father said.

Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy is the “sole prime accused” in the rape and murder case. Roy was initially arrested by the Kolkata Police, a day after PGT doctor’s body was recovered from a seminar hall of RG Kar hospital premises on August 9, 2024.

The case was probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the Calcutta High Court handed over the probe to the central agency from the Kolkata Police.

The RG Kar rape & murder incident triggered a massive outrage across the country and abroad last year and common people hit the roads and protested on the issue.

West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front (WBJDF) representative Soumyadeep Roy today said, “Our fight for justice is our main motto. CBI had said that they will file a supplementary chargesheet but it has not been filed.”

“From the beginning of the movement, our motto was clear that we want justice for Abhaya. We wanted to know from the beginning, how many people are involved-single person or many. How could a civic volunteer enter RG Kar hospital from outside and commit a crime?” a junior doctor Aniket Mahato who was one of face of the protest, said.

Though CBI arrested former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh and the former SHO of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal on charges of tampering and altering the evidence, both were granted “default bail” later by the court. The CBI failed to file a supplementary charge sheet against them within 90 days from the date of their arrest. However, Ghosh remains arrested in connection with corruption in a financial irregularities case in RG KarMedical by the Enforcement Directorate.

Meanwhile, verdict in another case of rape and murder of a minor was announced on Friday where death sentence was pronounced in the rape and murder of the main accused.

Following the verdict, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in the X Handle Post, “The Court has pronounced death sentence for the convict who had raped and murdered the small girl of Gurap and I thank the Judiciary for that. I thank Hooghly Rural District Police for their swift action and thorough probe that ensured speedy trial and conviction in 54 days. My heart goes to the family, and I share their pain and longing. A rapist has no place in our world. All of us together will make it a safer place for our children through stringent law, social reforms, effective and unforgiving administration. No such crime will go unpunished.”
