Senior photographer of Kannada daily Udayavani Satish Ira from Mangaluru has won the first prize in the first press photography competition organized by the Karnataka Media Academy in Hubballi on Sunday.

His photograph of the Sankranti festival shot near Mysuru won the prize.

Labour and district in-charge Minister Santosh Lad distributed the prizes at the Focus on News competition and workshop organized by the academy in Hubballi’s Indira Glass House.

The second prize was won by the photograph titled Neeranarasuttha depicting the suffering of people during drought, by Prajavani photographer Prakash Kandakur of Koppal.

The third prize was won by the photograph Tungabhadreya Rodane by Prajavani photographer Bharat Kandakur of Koppal, which shows the dark side of water pollution.

Photographs of Vijaya Karnataka photographer Sudhindra Kulkarni of Vijayapura, Prajavani photographer B.M. Kedarnath of Dharwad and Kannada Prabha photographer Nabhiraj Dastenavara of Koppal were appreciated by the judges.

The first three prizes carried ₹35,000, ₹25,000 and ₹15,000, respectively, in cash.

Senior photographer S. Thippeswamy, senior journalist Imran Qureshi and Chief Photographer of The Hindu K. Bhagyaprakash were the judges.

Academy president Ayesha Khanum, members K. Venkatesh, Abbas Mulla and others were present.
