Salaries at Foreign Universities: Absolute Joke

International universities are potentially losing their charm over Indian professors who seek contractual roles in the UK. Meanwhile, their Indian counterparts are able to retain the top academic talent in the country with better offers.

Anant Sudarshan, an Associate Professor at the University of Warwick, called out low wages in UK universities “an absolute joke.” In his post on X, he claimed that he has lost potential hires to government universities in India as they are paying “slightly more.”

While UK salaries are still higher on average, the Indian-origin professor pointed out that the gap is shrinking, especially considering the disparity in the cost of living. This means that short-term project staff in India earn more in absolute terms making it hard for them to go for the leap abroad.

Unfortunately, the critique was met with racist comments from users online. People accused him of hiring foreigners instead of UK citizens and even told him to “go back to your country.”

Sudarshan’s remarks should lead to a healthy debate concerning professors’ wages in premium institutions. Thus, it is disheartening to see people be dismissive of his comments just because of his Indian heritage.
