KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • India will take on Australia in 3 ODIs before the World Cup
  • Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Men in Blue
  • Only the World Cup-bound players are expected to be named in the team

After their success in the 203 Asia Cup, India will lock horns with Australia in a three-match ODI series, starting September 22. It will be the final rehearsal for both teams before the start of the 2023 World Cup. The series will be of utmost importance for Australia as they will get to play in the host nation of the upcoming ICC event.

India have already announced their World Cup squad but the selectors didn’t name the squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. There isn’t expected to be even one change and only the World Cup-bound players might be named in the squad for the Australia series. Here’s a look at the predicted squad for 3 ODIs –

Openers

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill will continue to open the innings in the all-important series before the World Cup. The team management did send Ishan Kishan to open the innings in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka but they aren’t expected to take any decision like this against Australia or in the World Cup.

Middle-order

Shreyas Iyer, who only played two matches before being ruled out due to a back issue, is expected to retain his spot. There is still no official word on his availability. He is expected to be given time to recover as and retain his spot as Iyer is a key member of the ODI team. Virat Kohli will continue to bat at number 3.

Wicketkeepers Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul complete the middle-order. There’s no doubt that Rahul is the first-choice wicketkeeper, which means that Kishan will have to warm the bench if Iyer bats at number 4.

Sanju Samson is in the scheme of things for the World Cup but he will only get a callup if any player gets ruled out. He travelled to SL as a reserve player for Rahul.

All-rounders

Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur will be the four all-rounders in the team. Axar did miss the final of the 2023 Asia Cup but is expected to be fit for the Australia series. The BCCI flew Washington Sundar to Sri Lanka for the final. He was named in the playing XI but didn’t get a chance to bat or bowl.
Tilak Varma , who made his debut against Bangladesh, looks all but set to be dropped from the ODI team.

Bowlers

Jasprit Bumrah will continue to lead the pace attack and will have Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami as other pacers. With his six-fer against SL, Siraj has shown why he was chosen over Shami right from the first game. Kuldeep Yadav will be the sole frontline spinneer in the team. Prasidh Krishna will not be able to find a place in the 15-member squad.

India’s likely squad for Australia ODI series: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasorut Burah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav
